Self- help - an introduction

There is a lot that you can do to help yourself. The modules listed below take you through exercises that will help you to address a variety of issues that you may be experiencing. We suggest that you work through these in order but there may be ones that feel more important to you and you want to start addressing first. We would encourage you to look at all sections, even if you feel confident in them, as you may still find them helpful.

 


Understanding motivations

This module aims to help you explore and gain understanding of your problematic sexual thoughts and consider their origins and progression.

 

 


Problem of immediate gratification

This module aims to help you:

  • explore and gain understanding of why immediate gratification is so powerful
  • consider ways to counter the power of immediate gratification.

Triggers and warning signs

This module aims to:

  • help you explore and gain understanding of the different types of triggers
  • help you gain understanding of your own triggers.

Taking responsibility and control

This module aims to help you explore and gain understanding of: 

  • your level of control over your current sexual behaviours
  • how you have used denial to allow your problematic behaviour to continue and how to make immediate changes to start the change process.

Fantasy

This module aims to help you to:

  • raise awareness of your current sexual and non-sexual fantasies
  • recognise and reflect on the link between your fantasies and your behaviour.

Recognising and dealing with feelings

This module aims to help you explore and gain an understanding of:

  • how your emotions influence your thinking and behaviour
  • the differences between positive and negative thinking
  • how to challenge your negative thoughts
  • how to manage negative feelings and cope with difficult emotions e.g. anger

Opening up to others

  • This module aims to help you reflect on the potential benefits of talking to someone about your thoughts and feelings - both generally and specifically.
  • It identifies things to consider when telling other people about your sexual thoughts regarding children.

Self-esteem and assertiveness

This module aims to help you explore and gain an understanding of:

  • how to become more assertive
  • what self-esteem is and how to increase it.

Problem solving

This module aims to help you explore and gain an understanding of:

  • the benefits of problem solving and how it can be applied to a range of different types of problems
  • ways to avoid acting on impulse.

Self-talk

This module aims to help you:

  • explore and gain understanding of Self-talk.

 


Relapse prevention

This module aims to: 

  • help you avoid repeating previous inappropriate behaviour or thoughts
  • keep you moving forward positively.

Building a good life

This module aims to help you build a fulfilling life moving forward
